{"id":1926,"date":"2008-11-02T19:29:00","date_gmt":"2008-11-02T19:29:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/projects\/horsesforsources\/can-flagging-industries-be-replaced-by-bpo-services\/"},"modified":"2008-11-02T19:29:00","modified_gmt":"2008-11-02T19:29:00","slug":"can-flagging-industries-be-replaced-by-bpo-services","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.horsesforsources.com\/can-flagging-industries-be-replaced-by-bpo-services\/","title":{"rendered":"Can flagging industries be replaced by BPO services?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"British Coal-mine\" border=\"0\" class=\"at-xid-6a00d8356fb76c69e2010535d36dfc970c \" src=\"http:\/\/www.horsesforsources.com\/images\/6a00d8356fb76c69e2010535d36dfc970c-800wi.jpg\" style=\"FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 5px\" title=\"British Coal-mine\" \/> I had a distressing conversation regarding the future of the US automotive industry today with a guy from Detroit.&#0160; Their main concern these days is the <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/GCA-autos\/idUSTRE49J09E20081020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>widely-speculated acquisition<\/em><\/a><em> of Chrysler by General Motors.&#0160;<\/em> <\/p>\n<div class=\"text_exposed\" id=\"text_expose_id_490e405fedc6a0769271550\">The expectation is that if GM buys Chrysler,&#0160;it will only&#0160;retain the Jeep and Minivan businesses, close all the other Chrysler plants, and lay off 75% of Chrysler&#39;s engineering staff, for a direct loss of 90,000 jobs &#8211; not including ~6x more jobs at suppliers &#8211; &#0160;throughout North America. If no merger happens, one or more of the &quot;Big 3&quot; will go bankrupt, <span class=\"text_exposed_show\">resulting in a total loss of all jobs &#8211; more than 120,000. One of&#0160;his neighbors is putting his house on the market tomorrow, anticipating losing his job soon. Several other friends and neighbors expect to lose their jobs by the end of the year.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"text_exposed\"><span class=\"text_exposed_show\"><\/span>&#0160;<\/div>\n<div class=\"text_exposed\"><span class=\"text_exposed_show\">This reminds me of the situation in the UK in the 1980&#39;s when<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<p><!-- pagebreak --><br \/>\nthe majority of the British coal-mines had to be shutdown due to unprofitability. Entire cities were left with mass-unemployment, leaving the British government with little choice but to invest in attracting new business and investment to cities.&#0160; One of the most notable success stories has been the development of 650,000 call center and BPO jobs across many of these cities where old industries were dissolved.&#0160; Many of these jobs are also in the financial services sector, supporting such businesses as MBNA and Sun Life.<\/p>\n<div class=\"text_exposed\"><span class=\"text_exposed_show\"><\/span>&#0160;<\/div>\n<div class=\"text_exposed\"><span class=\"text_exposed_show\">Whomever gets elected on Tuesday night is facing a massive task to redeploy workers in consolidating and declining industries, such as automotive manufacturing.&#0160; As we discussed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.horsesforsources.com\/2008\/10\/why-not-build-a-shared-services-infrastructure-to-prop-up-the-banking-sector.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">so animatedly<\/a>&#0160;last week, could creating BPO jobs we an answer?&#0160; Could the USA become a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.horsesforsources.com\/2008\/10\/will-obama-turn-the-usa-into-a-competitive-sourcing-location.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">competitive BPO location<\/a>?<\/span><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I had a distressing conversation regarding the future of the US automotive industry today with a guy from Detroit.&#0160; Their&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[48,50,80,838],"tags":[],"ppma_author":[19],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v22.5 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Can flagging industries be replaced by BPO services?
